It is a common
misconception amongst business professionals that bigger is better when
selecting a law firm. Unfortunately, to a national law firm, a client
is just another billable account. Most associates never meet the client
and ultimately do not understand the nature of the transaction. Large
firms are run like assembly lines, with a different attorney working
on each aspect of a clients representation and no single attorney
understanding the overall focus of the matter at hand.
Usually a partner
meets with the client and then delegates the actual legal work to a
team of associates, diluting the message in the process. The associates
must create updates for the partner in order to communicate their progress
on the file. The partner then bills the client for being updated and
the associates bill the client for the legal work, creating twice the
expense. Each time the partner requires an update another bill is generated.
The unfortunate result is that the client incurs excessive expense for
legal work that is substandard at best. If the work lacks cohesion then
more billable hours are generated by associates who must correct work
that should have been done properly in the first place. The most disturbing
fact is that lawyers in large firms are invariably rookies learning
the trade or are tired partners biding their time until retirement.
Either way, the client loses.
